Tips for Gathering Kids’ School Supplies on a Budget

Back to school season can be really, really expensive. This is especially true if you have older kids and are unsure of which items they’ll need until after the semester starts. The good news is there are ways to save money. Whether you clip coupons or take advantage of overages, you can gather kids’ school supplies on a budget.

Clip Coupons

There are so many great coupons for school supplies in the months of July, August, and September. You’ll find coupons on everything from notebooks to pens. When these coupons are available, make sure you purchase several papers at once or ask your friends and family for their inserts. These coupons can save you a lot of money.

Match Coupons to Sales

Once you have your coupons in hand, look through the sales papers to find the items on sale. Many times you’ll be able to match the coupons to the sales to get cheap or free school supplies. For example, you may have a coupon for $1 off two notebooks and the notebooks be on sale for $0.50 each. This allows you to get notebooks absolutely free.

Use Any Overages for Other Items

Sometimes you’ll have coupons that allow you to get an overage. Use these overages to buy school supplies. Walmart allows for overages and often has some of the best prices on school supplies. Let’s say you have a coupon for $3 off any razor and find razors for $0.97. This will give you a $2.03 overage for each pack of razors you purchase with a coupon. Use that money wisely.

Be Careful Where You Shop

A lot of parents shop at the Dollar Tree for school supplies. While the Dollar Tree often has great deals on a number of items, you’ll find that Walmart has better prices on their school supplies. Better yet, Walmart carries name brand products for less than what you’ll pay for generic at the Dollar Tree.

Look for Bonus Packs

Last, but not least, always be on the lookout for bonus packs. The only time you want to avoid bonus packs is when you’re using a coupon. In that case, buy the smallest quantity that the coupon allows to maximize your savings. You can find bonus packs of pens, pencils, loose leaf paper, and much more.

Even if you’re on a tiny budget, you can gather kids’ school supplies without overspending. Clip those coupons, match those sales, and use those overages. Also be careful where you shop and to buy bonus packs when it makes sense to do so.
